Austrian Felix Baumgartner has just demonstrated what can be achieved when a crazy stunt combines with social media. On YouTube, 8 million people (and still growing) watched him skydiving from a height of 24 miles, breaking the sound barrier as he spiralled to the earth at speeds of up to 834 mph.
There were 3 million tweets about the event, and 216,000 people ‘liked’ the photo of Baumgartner safely touching down on Facebook. I’m sure Felix’s family were relieved – but I bet his sponsors, Red Bull, were even happier….because it’s reckoned the free publicity all this has generated for them has been worth £100 million.
Social media is based on sharing and people will love you if you share material of interest with them. So how can you grab some marketing social media rocket fuel for your business? The good news is you don’t have to jump out of a balloon 24 miles up, you won’t even have to touch one of Red Bull’s ghastly energy drinks, your flight plan could be much simpler!
Social media was set up to be exactly that – SOCIAL!! People are not interested if all you do is shout about yourself – YOUR business, YOUR products, YOUR offers – don’t fall into this trap and remember in one click you could be silenced.
Figure out what ‘conversions’ your customers perceive of value, you could provide value when you help the other person get what THEY want. This might be information, news, or resources that help them professionally, in their business or job, or satisfy personal needs, interests or desires. For example – If you sold handmade furniture, you could talk about interior design in general, about easy furniture care, about the materials you use and what makes them special.
Open your imagination and be interesting, the skies your limit!!
