I previous wrote a blog for MyTradeTV, regarding ‘Social media the basics – but look what could be achieved’, giving an overview of the basics to help make your social media work better for you. However, I would be doing an injustice, if I didn’t also mention some of the pitfalls of social media.
LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Bebo, Google and MySpace to name a few are all great ways of creating ‘social media’ opportunities and theoretically they could help promote your business.
At first glance, this activity is quick, easy to do and can be accessed by audiences on an array of communication application. One catch!!! The time and effort needed to chase every social media opportunity and perfect your communication to the nth degree, could be a CRIMINAL waste of time?
Sign up! Join here! Tweet me! It’s completely free! All you need is an e-mail address, you will hear them cry!! Basically, these activities ARE NOT FREE and coupled with the offering up of your personal information, you may spend more time deleting junk mail, rather than being a social media wizard.
Everyone’s time is precious in business and no matter how wealthy you are you can never buy your time back. So, be prudent use the basics of the 20/80 rule and decide the best marketing activity to benefit your business. In this case, 20% of resource = 80% of benefits!!
Look at other on-line options; email marketing – it’s direct, personal, one to one, and doesn’t operate within the same level of noise as social media (to name just a few reasons). Another is pay per click (PPC) advertising – because, if you set it up right, it will deliver people who are actively SEARCHING for your products and services to your website 24/7, WITHOUT constant effort.
My advice – there is no such thing as free marketing – just SMART marketing!
