Sash Windows Northwest Ltd have been contracted to do an amazing window renovation of a historical building called Pioneer House in Dewsbury. This is a landmark building in the centre of Dewsbury which has unfortunately been given bad press over the years as the project has been delayed until Kirklees Council have enforced the prior owner to sell the building in order to protect the building from further decay. Kirklees Council are working with The Princes Trust to revamp the building and bring it back into full use.
Pioneer House has dominated Dewsbury’s skyline since 1878 when it was built for Dewsbury’s Pioneer Industrial Society from which to sell its produce and wares. There have been a wide variety of tenants over the years including a Theatre, Library, French Polishers, Butchers, Cobblers and a restaurant.
Andrew Moon (Managing Director) of Sash Windows Northwest had this to say about securing the contract. “Being able to help Kirklees Council protect the future of this historically important building and bring it back to life and into safe public hands is fantastic.”
The building has many hidden surprises with old posters, a huge empty safe, beautiful painted archways, ornate mouldings and beautifully crafted sash windows. The entire project includes repairing the roof, re-leading the clock dome, repointing, replacing structural timbers and window replacement and repair.
The window project includes 200+ windows to be rot repaired, draught proofed, re-glazed and renovated. There is also Cathedral glass that will be replaced to match the original and louvred windows in the clock tower to be renovated. Most windows are Sash Windows but we will also be renovating Casement Windows and Doors. Sash Windows Northwest will be repairing the windows in a way which is sympathetic to the environment but which is also fit for modern day use but richly embellished in the late Victorian manner.
Pioneer House has some beautiful stained glass windows that really set the mood for reminiscing over days gone by when it was once filled with laughter and cheers of people enjoying a film or having a meal.
As Sash Windows Northwest are working in such an important historical building the question arose as to “How do we fit a Double Glazed unit into a Single Glazed frame without compromising the quality?” The answer was for them to work closely with another firm in Harrogate called HistoGlass that specialise in a new pioneering form of Double Glazing. They are able to provide double glazed units as small as 10mm deep so Sash Windows Northwest ltd were able to restore the old boxes and sashes to their original glory but now have the added benefit of double glazing.
Sash Windows Northwest ltd are now in month six of the project and the building is slowly gaining its pride from years of neglect.
