Now that we’ve all had a bit of sun to warm us all up and feel better about life, we can start to look at what is going to be big this year.
I think most are of the opinion that bi-folding doors are going to be a big hit this summer and overall this year. Though bi-folds were launched a few years ago, it is only now that people are really starting to buy into the idea of opening up whole rooms into their outdoor space. It was probably to be expected as with anything new it will always take a little while to catch on.
But with programmes like Grand Designs and other similar ones on TV often showing bi-folding doors and how they fit in with the new property, the product has quickly gained a lot of traction and is fast becoming one of the most popular products within our industry. Just look at the number of specialist bi-fold door manufacturers that have sprung up over the last few years!
They’re expensive compared to French doors or patio sliders, but it is totally justified and the customer can see it – which is key. There is far more manufacturing that goes into a bi-fold. But the space that is gained and the ease of use makes it very easy to justify it’s higher cost.
It’s not only weather likes this which gets the mind thinking of bi-folding doors, but also of glazed extensions. I say glazed extensions because lets face it, we’re not really pushing the “conservatory” now are we?! We’re shouting about Loggias, orangeries and extensions with plenty of light. The new crop of products absolutely walk all over the standard glass box and the customer now knows that.
Glazed extensions are always thought about at this time of year due to the nice weather. And one thing that a lot of glazed extensions are going to feature are bi-folding doors. These two products go together better than an egg and a spoon in a race! They both compliment the idea of light and space. And what is better than being able to open up a stunning glass room into your garden area, especially when the weather is fine and you have the BBQ going?
The bottom fell out of the conservatory market quite a while ago now. But since then the industry has been trying hard to force it back up again with orangeries, Loggias and similar products. The hard work seems to now be paying off as sales in these new products continue their upward trend. It is the job of the installers however to make sure they keep promoting these new innovations. This way the consumer will start to understand that these are the new standards now and that the old white boxes of the past are indeed that – the past!
Enjoy the sun and the warmth while it lasts everyone. This is probably our summer!
