Busy hoteliers Mr & Mrs Kalavanas have lived in their detached property for the last 5 years, and while it has been a very comfortable home for their family, they had always aspired to opening up the kitchen to create a more sociable space. As Mr Kalavanas explained “like most modern families we spend most of our time in the kitchen and when we come home from work and the children come home from school it’s lovely to all gather in the kitchen and talk about the day’s events. With this in mind we decided to look into an extension.”
They set about exploring the different options available to them and quickly decided that an orangery was too pricey, so instead they applied for planning permission for a traditional brick built extension, however once permission had been granted the couple suddenly realised from the plans that their property would not lend itself to this type of extension. “Having looked over the plans we felt that it would feel more like an add-on rather than a room” said Mr Kalavanas. Disappointed, but not disheartened they contacted Cherwell Windows to enquire about alternative solutions – it was at this point they discovered Loggia. “From the minute we saw the Loggia we knew it would be perfect for us and it would allow us to open up the kitchen creating the large, open family living space we were hoping to achieve. The aesthetics of Loggia and the different colour options available were all winning features for us, it is a truly brilliant design. The options were endless when it came to designing our Loggia, from the doors, windows, glass, bespoke colour, size, interior lighting – it’s a totally unique space,” said Mr Kalavanas.
Looking at the design and installation as a whole Ryan Breslin from Cherwell Windows commented. “We configured the design to suit the Kalavanas’ needs for an open plan space and because Loggia is so unique in terms of its flexibility we were able to add in exit routes to the side and front, bespoke windows and a full solar efficient, self-cleaning glass roof. The Loggia has a real contemporary feel to it with its clean lines and has opened up the entire property. It was a very efficient process and not taking into account the preparation and ground works, the frame was up and water tight in just a week. Loggia is a really cost effective way of achieving an orangery style extension.”
The Kalavanas family are now enjoying the new space and love it so much that they are planning to reconfigure the kitchen to reposition the island unit further into the Loggia. Mr Kalavanas concludes “we love it so much and it feels like a proper room, we couldn’t be happier.”
