It is an unfortunate aspect of modern life that we tend to pigeonhole people and even sectors of activity. Barriers are constructed so that we often regard others in what can be an allied trade or profession as being almost alien or irrelevant to us.
MyTradeTV has just launched another channel for the plumbing and heating sector and it is interesting at this early stage, to see how the issues playing an active part here are those seen in the glass and glazing industry. The Green Deal has already been mentioned but the perennial matter of the end user not trusting tradespeople, is another, as a recent joint survey by TrustMark and HomeOwners Alliance showed.
Of course, TrustMark has widespread support from a number of trade associations but after a number of years and quite a few online offerings, advertising heavily on television, Joe and Josephine Public are more confused with such a surplus of dotcom choice. This is a problem that is likely to dog us in this country for many a year to come.
In the meantime, it is essential that professionals in the built environment see their common interests, even if it means swallowing pride and prejudice to read what’s going on in another sector.
