When Burgin Conservatories & Orangeries faced a problematic conservatory installation – after the wettest winter on record – Rapierstar Protect ProShield™ came to the rescue.
The gable end PVCu framed conservatory was constructed in the garden of a three story town house style property in Sheffield. The building is part of a terrace and is constructed of concrete block type masonry, which on testing along with the mortar joints, demonstrated high water absorption characteristics.
The conservatory was built with cavity tray and vertical DPCs as you would expect in such an exposed area but the property still became susceptible to moisture patches within the conservatory. After checks to ensure no water was penetrating because of building faults, it emerged that penetrating rain was tracking around cavity trays and lintels and deflecting outward to the plastered wall area inside the new conservatory.
ProShield™ XT Cream was applied to the full extent of the rear wall area, around and above the conservatory. Unlike water repellent surface coatings or physical building additions, ProShield™ treatments penetrate deeply, combining at the molecular level with the structure. This creates a strong bond and when cured is invisible to the naked eye, retaining the look of the original brick.
This area will now have greater rain penetration resistance and will enjoy the added benefit of contributing to greater thermal efficiency of the wall structure. By bonding at a deep molecular level, ProShield™ provides maximum resistance to UV attack. High resistance to alkalis degradation also means that you can have a water repellent building surface lasting 20-30 years between repeat applications
