Everglade Interview Video

Michael Gannon – Hello.  I’m Michael Gannon, Editor of My Trade TV and I’m with Vinod Gopal the managing director of Everglade.  Today we’ve seen the one day conference…how do you think it’s gone?

Vinod Gopal – I think it’s very successful considering the time here and the number of companies are so busy, it was really had work for us to actually get the commitment.  But the turnout, we are really overwhelmed with.  We are so excited with so many number of people managed to turn up.

Michael Gannon – And these are all your installer customers of course?

Vinod Gopal – That’s right yes.  They are installer customers, some of them are potential customers, some of them completely new I haven’t met, so yes really exciting.  A good mix of customers really.

Michael Gannon – And how far did they travel say?

Vinod Gopal – Oh from Norfolk on this side to Brighton, so good distance.

Michael Gannon – I was interested in the speakers because it seemed to be much broader than I anticipated because you have social media and how that can work for your installer customers and even on health and safety.  Is that the way you look upon things, the sort of broad-brushed approach?

Vinod Gopal – Yes this is deliberate.  We like to see that our customers gain from every angle and if we can help them with expertise in different areas of running the businesses.  And I think that’s more important to us than just focusing on product itself.  So this is generally the composition of our seminars that we have here.

Michael Gannon – So in other words for trade fabricators it’s not just a function of selling products…

Vinod Gopal – No it’s how else we can help them as a company, our resources to be able to support them in every different way and actually be successful in their own businesses, rather than just selling them a type of a product and asking them to go and just do that.  We just want to be able to give them more than just giving them a good product.

Michael Gannon – And from the feedback you’ve got so far, what’s the general feeling that you’ve had from your customers on this day’s event?

Vinod Gopal – So far I think everybody was again so pleased that they turned up and everybody gained something from some of the seminars, some of the presentations we had.  So things like health and safety, this is all important to people but there are always one or two elements that they can take back and apply to their businesses.  Things like documentation.  Which is quite a common reason why companies fail with the installations.  Simple things like this are useful.  Customers really benefit from this.

Michael Gannon – One fact that surprised me rather because it was mentioned by Andy Ball (Balls Marketing) was that more companies fail coming out of the recession than actually in it.  Is that something that you found?

Vinod Gopal – Yes it’s true.  What happens is when companies take on extra business, they haven’t always planned for the resources, whether they’re financial, manpower…and when the extra business comes away, all of a sudden they need to fund the extra business.  They need to find professionals to carry out the extra business.  They can’t find enough suppliers to supply them in good time.  The prices of raw materials.  All of these things work together, sometimes there’s a big squeeze on the profits. And if companies haven’t planned for this it can have a negative effect.

Michael Gannon – And presumably as a fabricator it’s very important for you to keep your focus on them so that you can back them up if they are experiencing this kind of problem.

Vinod Gopal – Well, that’s right.  This is the whole idea.  If our customers are successful and if our customers can avoid this and foresee this kind of problem and they’re prepared for it then it’s all the better for us, we have a more successful company and we don’t have the negative effects in return.

Michael Gannon – And again, this kind of event, this conference would highlight those kind of difficulties that you can talk through to your customers about.

Vinod Gopal – That’s right.  That’s the whole idea you know, it gives us a platform to accommodate all different kinds of subjects, different key issues, the companies place during different times of the year, during different economic cycle.  So we try and focus on something that will help them.

Michael Gannon – And it’s early days yet but have you planned for the end of this year or the beginning of next.

Vinod Gopal – We’ve tried to because it’s always difficult to get everybody’s commitment to attend here and every discussion and they all come from miles away.  And they have to give up their businesses. A lot of our customers have hands-on businesses, so we don’t really want to have too many per year.  If we can one or two per year the customer won’t find it too much of a burden for them to leave the business.  So we’ll see what brings in the next year.  And I’m sure we’ll have the right information and subjects to talk about for next year.
