So the main taking points this month must come down to the Super 8’s. I myself do not fully trust this system, but that being said it is nice for a championship club to test themselves against Super league opposition on a semi regular basis. We all love the excitement the Challenge cup brings with its GIANT killings, but this allows the Championship sides regular games against top flight opposition. Regular being 4 games in 7 weeks. My main issue with this is that we may end up with the same 12 teams in Super League next year. Although it has its critics I believe that if a team finishes top they deserve to be promoted and giving a chance.
Keeping my fingers crossed that “Fev” could pull something out the bag and make the top 4 of the Championship. I would say that it has been one of the most turbulent months in recent times. The news that Jon Sharp has replaced Andy Hey as head coach and some bizarre results on the field. Meaning that we miss out on the middle 8’s. Something I would have bet money on at the start of the season that we would qualify for.
As well as all this excitement we have lost (in my eyes) one of the true greats in our sport, with the news of Paul Wellens’ retirement. I know that the sport can take a heavy toll on your body but looking in from the outside he seems a genuine man who has given his all to Saints over the past 17 years. I can truly say I will miss watching you play.
With this is mind it would make sense for me to talk about the Challenge cup as Leeds take on Saints in the first Challenge cup semi-final to be televised on a Friday night. As well as the Warrington v Hull KR game, I believe we have 2 mouth-watering ties to get to The Challenge cup final. Putting my neck on the block with this but I fancy Leeds and Warrington to be contesting the final on the 29th August.
So all in all quite a busy month for the game of Rugby League, from the super 8’s to the challenge cup and people often ask me why I think it is the greatest game ever invented. I tell them that whatever goes on off the field there will always be world class on it.
