We recently carried out some live market research at the Buildings and Energy Efficiency Show during which we asked a series of questions to attendees on a wide range of topics relevant to the event.
What really struck me was the desire of the people not only to answer the questions but to express a detailed and heart felt opinion.
It is one of the things that social media has brought to the fore – people are more easily able to share their views on all subjects they have an interest in, and have become more confident in doing so.
This is a really good thing. It shows that people really do care about important subjects, and it gives those people who are trying to shape policies (as in the case of the event we were at) an opportunity to really gauge the feeling across a wider section of people than they might ordinarily have been able to achieve.
It shows once again the value of taking people’s opinions, and listening to them – whether that be as a part of developing products, understanding trends or shaping policies, or of understanding customer satisfaction levels in your business. It is very easy to fall into the trap of only considering our own opinions, or those of a small group of people around us. We all do it, and we shouldn’t!
We would encourage people to take as wide a range of opinions as possible, there is real value in it.
For us carrying out the research live was an added bonus, it created more interaction and debate than you would get simply carrying out research by more traditional means, and perhaps reinforces again that face to face business is still the best.
The outcome of what we did was really fantastic, the opinions expressed were sincere and well thought out and has given the people who offered the questions a real insight into what people think. This information will help them enormously going forward.
