Locksmith – Clippings and Musings – December 2016

With the Festive Season well on its way security is probably one of the most important things going through people’s minds as many stockpile presents through the month and look to visit family on the big day.

Nowadays a Smart Home is becoming increasingly popular with the ‘Internet of Things’ making home security much more versatile. Remote locking systems used via smartphones and apps appear increasingly popular with homeowners and would seem to be simple and cost effective solutions for smart security.

Getting Smart

The simplicity of a smart security system that connects to home Wi-Fi offers a level of personal control that seems to give consumers great peace of mind. A typical entry level solution might include a couple of door and window sensors as well as a motion detector that link to an integrated hub. All of these then communicate with a Wi-Fi system that connect to an app or smartphone. As smart security can be expanded to give greater security options with lights, sirens and outdoor surveillance options if desired, homeowners are seizing the benefits these systems offer at the swipe of a screen.

iCloud storage makes a cost effective and simple storage solution for consumers with more limited finances who cannot necessarily afford higher tech alternatives. However, being able to personalise a system where individual rules can be created so that the components work together seamlessly is very appealing.

Whether its camera surveillance or a comprehensive home security system that doubles as a home automation system this sector’s business appears to be booming as we head towards 2017.

Safe As Houses

Following on the theme of safer doors and windows, UNION has launched a new CE3F Door Closer which is a fixed size 3 rack and pinion door closer that is CE marked and fire rated for metal and fire doors in regular, transom and parallel mounting positions.

After rigorous testing the CE3F has been Certfire approved and is substantiated by a ten year guarantee. Being simple to install it is suitable for a variety of applications and installers can complete installation in all three configurations with all key components supplied. The system is offered with adjustable closing speed and latch action for complete control.

Alison Aston, Product Manager for Door Closers at ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, said: “The CE3F is the first in a new range of high-quality and reliable door closers for the trade. Designed, developed and tested at our manufacturing facility in the UK, the CE3F is the first in its class to be CE Marked in all three positions and fire rated for timber and metal fire doors, providing peace of mind for the installer and assured safety for the end user.

“Competitively priced, both installers and users can be assured that the CE3F is unmatched in terms of quality, reliability and exceptional value for money.”

Another market leader has been working hard to keep us safe. Axim has brought the Reversible Deadlatch to the market which features a completely hands free reversible latch bolt.

The fully reversible Axim LK-2100 standard duty deadlatch range allows installers to carry one stock item instead of two providing a reduction in stock levels. Focus on commercial applications where two way traffic is necessary has also been considered in its design.

The Axim LK-2100 deadlatch product is an ideal product to be used and specified alongside the Axim ES-2100 Electric Strike range providing a remote access control solution for doors.

Taking a step into the hospitality arena, SALTO has announced that its chic AElement RFID lock now supports the company’s JustIN Mobile technology. This gives hotel guests a convenient and keyless experience using mobile access.
Guests and hotel staff can use their mobile devices as a key which provides them with secure access to either certain areas of a hotel, to the entire property or to a number of global locations if desired.

The JustIN Mobile app gives hotels managers greater control over access and makes check-in a faster and more secure experience.

Vice President, Rob Zijl, commented, “Guest’s demand for the use of smartphones and apps as part of their hotel experience is increasing steeply. More and more major hotel chains as well as individual boutique hotels are embracing this smart technology. With AElement, we extend this technology, combining the design of a stylish lock with the latest and most advanced access control technology.”

Great Recognition

With Awards Season still in full swing, one of the UK’s security experts, Abloy UK sponsored the Locksmiths category and consequently presented Crothers Security with the Locksmith Of The Year Award at the recent Irish Security Institute Association (ISIA) Awards 2016.

Held this year at Powerscourt Hotel and Resort Spa, in Co. Wicklow the Awards aim to recognise Irish security companies covering all aspects of the sector from manned security to smart technology and locksmiths.

Crothers Security was set up by Kevin Crothers in 1980 to provide the first 24-hour burglary repair service in Dublin. Subsequently, this grew in two years from supplying and installing a variety security products to opening a retail outlet and locksmith shop in Walkinstown. Further expansions have seen the company grow its services and product line to include Access Control, CCTV as well as burglar and fire alarms.

The Irish sector is progressively moving forward with the Locksmith division experiencing rapid developments as PSA (Private Security Authority) is set to be introduced in 2017. On top of this changes to Building Regulations will be brought into effect and will align them with current European Standards in relation to Escape and Fire Doors where compliant specifications will be essential.

Steven Crothers, commented: “This is the third time we have won the ISIA Locksmith Of The Year award and are delighted to have retained it from 2015. This is a testament to the excellence of our staff as well as our careful selection of quality products, epitomised by Abloy’s range.”

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, said: “This is the first year that Abloy has been associated with the Irish Security Institute Association Awards and we’ve been impressed with the event organisation and friendly atmosphere.”

Christmas Wishes

Being the last Clippings and Musings of 2016, I wanted to just take the opportunity to remind you that once again Lee, Nick and the team will be wrapping presents for children who are unfortunate enough to be in hospital this year. If you feel you would like to contribute or give a little support and encouragement to everyone then do contact Lee – the Santa suit still fits him and he does a great job of bringing a little Christmas cheer to the children, their families and the nursing staff.

Looking towards 2017, MyTrade has some wonderful creative projects on the way which we are already working on with customers. As we look at expanding our team, services and productions, the entire team would like to send you a special greeting at Christmas to express our sincere appreciation and thanks for
your confidence and loyalty.

Nick, Lee and the rest of the MyTrade team extend our best wishes to everyone hoping you have a very happy and healthy festive season and of course, a very prosperous 2017.
