When is a fire door not a fire door?
It’s a serious question that many should be asking when choosing the right fire doors, say the experts from Masterdor, the GRP and engineered timber door specialists owned by Synseal Group.
“A fire door is only a fire door if it is installed correctly, with fully tested, fire-rated hardware and frames which meet British Standards,” says Group Sales and Marketing Director, Andy Jones.
“We have seen an increase in enquiries about fire door specification following the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in June, as fire safety has come under wider scrutiny. We get a lot of questions from customers about how to combine the right door with appropriate hardware and frames to ensure that new and replacement fire doors are meeting or exceeding the project’s specification. Our Masterdor experts are always more than happy to answer these kinds of questions and guide customers through our products, hardware and frame options, and offer installation training as required to ensure our fire doors are fitted correctly to perform as expected.
“A lot of our customers also come to us with requests for fire doors but don’t always know whether they should be selling a FD30 or FD60 door, or whether they should be upgrading to FD30s/FD60s which also have fully tested seals for smoke resistance. That’s why we offer a complete range, with the choice of either a GRP or a solid, engineered timber product which both come in a wide choice of colours and styles. This means our customers can sell the very best fire doors while still giving the end consumer a bespoke style choice.”
The Benchmark fire door range includes six FD30s 44mm GRP fire doors available in five colours, and one of the only FD60s GRP doors available on the market. The Craftsman range includes many of Masterdor’s most popular traditional and contemporary engineered timber styles, available in 44mm thickness for a FD30/FD30s fire door or 54mm thickness for a FD60/FD60s fire door. All doors meet BS 476: part 22 standards and are available with fire-rated hardware which meets Secured by Design requirements, and a Sheerframe 8000 PVC-U frame with steel reinforcement which meets BS EN 1643 criteria for FD30s smoke testing.
